The History of the Soroban and Its Role in Modern Times

During the Edo period (1603–1868), the soroban became widely used in Japan, especially among merchants and traders.

Even with the introduction of modern calculators, the soroban remains a valuable tool in schools today, where children learn it not only for arithmetic but also to develop concentration, memory, and mental calculation skills.

It is an integral part of the educational curriculum and consistently ranks among the top extracurricular activities for children in Japan.

The soroban has since become a symbol of Japanese tradition and precision, still widely used by enthusiasts and professionals for its effectiveness in mental math.
